Christmas is the most
Secular time of the year
An ironic twist
My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?Bob Hope
The Washington Post Poll
The Pew Research Center in a recent poll says that self-identified Christians make up 63% of the U.S. population in 2021, which is down from 75% ten years ago.

Can we truly know

Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God and each invokes His aid against the other.Abe Lincoln, Second Inaugural Address
I worked with a friend at Lowe’s who happened to be a Pastor of a local church. He caught me reading a book in the breakroom about one of the books of the Bible. His response was, “Why don’t you just read the Bible?” I had another Pastor friend who told me that I could not understand the Bible unless I was truly saved. I asked him how one is truly saved and he said, “It’s all right there in the Bible.” But, if I can’t understand the Bible until I’m saved…? Nevermind! Ever wonder why there are so many books out there that are titled, “What the Bible Really Says About ________?” And why are there so many Christian denominations (45,000 plus) in the world? And let’s not forget that there are hundreds of different versions of the Bible itself. No confusion that I can see!

The war on Christmas
Condemn Happy Holidays!
End this war, Starbucks!
I am a veteran of the War on Christmas. I am just emerging from a battlefield strewn with dead trees and torn shreds of brightly colored wrapping paper.Henry Rollins
Politico War on Christmas Article
My haiku for today is a bit sarcastic. I have never believed that there was ever a war on Christmas. Most of my Christian friends celebrate a secular holiday as much and maybe even more than it is a religious holiday. Enough said about that.

List of Famous Televangelists
I had been a Christian for many, many years. The main reason for me leaving the church was the way my fellow Christians treated and judged others that didn’t believe the same way they did.

Paul said, “I wish that
Those who are upsetting you…
Would castrate themselves.”
I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves!Galatians 5:12 NRSV
The original New Testament of the Bible (which doesn’t exist) was written in Koine Greek (not English) and some Aramaic. The Greek copies that have been found over the years were translated into many other languages: Coptic, Latin, Syriac, Ethiopic, and a whole slew of others. The English translation didn’t happen until the 16th Century. Today, we have many, many versions of the English Bible. You may have grown up with one particular version thinking that it’s the true translation of the original. But, who really knows. So, try reading one of your favorite passages in different versions of the Bible. BibleGateway.com is where I go to quickly change the versions. It’s a treat for me! But, I’m weird that way!

What are the odds of winning?
So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.Mark 11:24 NRSV
If you tell a Christian that your prayer wasn’t answered, they’ll have a reason as to why it wasn’t. Just take a look at this list of “20 Biblical Reasons For Unanswered Prayers” and you’ll see what I mean. I wonder how many followers carry a Prayer Checklist with them to see if they might qualify to be answered? Just a thought. But, if you look at Mark 11:24, Jesus did not have any qualifications or reasons why your prayers won’t be answered. He simply says that all you have to do is “believe” that you have received it, and it will be yours. Ahh, that mystical word that I have a hard time comprehending – “believe.”

I asked God one time
If he could help me believe…
I hate cold coffee
Then he brought them outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”Acts 16:30-31 NRSV
Believing in Jesus is the key to the Christian religion. There are tons of Bible verses that say “if you believe” you’ll have eternal life, prayers will be answered, and so on. Now I can’t seem to find any that tell you “how to believe.” The Apostle Thomas got direct proof from Jesus that he was the Savior. But, I wasn’t there with Thomas and I want the same kind of proof. Praying doesn’t work unless you believe (Matthew 21:22). You’re not saved (given salvation) unless you believe (Acts 16:30-31). So, how does one believe? If someone told me that my wife was sleeping with another man, I wouldn’t just believe them.

“Thank you, Lord, for saving me!”
He creates evil
Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.Jeremiah 23:19 KJV
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.Isaiah 45:7 KJV
Deadly tornadoes ripped through four states over the weekend (12/2021) and killed unknown numbers of people. A woman captured on the news standing in front of her demolished house threw her arms up in the air and praised God for saving her life. I’m always astonished at how we give God credit for what we perceive to be good, but, say nothing about why God might have created the disaster in the first place. We just don’t give him enough credit!

Hope heaven is fun
Eternity is forever
Can I wear flip flops
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.Psalms 23:6 KJV
Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die…1 Corinthians 15:54 NLT
Have you ever wondered what we’re going to do in heaven, assuming that we get there? Surely it’s not just singing and praising God 24 hours a day and forever, is it? The Apostle Paul says that we’ll have “bodies that have been transformed into bodies that will never die.” I’m hoping that I can bring my favorite flip-flops so that I can at least be comfortable in my new body. Maybe a couple of my comfy t-shirts would be nice, too.

How many hymnals
Will Jesus have in heaven?
I’ll miss rock-n-roll
– Hymnal, Types of Hymnals
When I was a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, we had a couple of different hymnals available to sing from. I wonder how many different hymnals exist amongst the 45,000+ different Christian denominations in the world? I cannot imagine singing and worshipping all day and every day for eternity. Eternity is a long, long time. It’s forever! I’ll certainly miss Led Zeppelin and all the other rock bands that I grew up with! Hey! Gandhi says there’s rock-n-roll in hell. But, he’s such a prankster that I don’t know whether to believe him or not.
